“We are very excited about this beautiful block of PAN 4R-838BR", says Nelia Louw, Pannar's representative in the Northern Free State. This good-looking crop of PAN 4R-838BR is starting to go into seed. It looks very promising. Corne Oosthuizen, who farms near Koppies in the Northern Free State, planted the PAN 4R-838BR on 31 October 2022 at 27,000 plants per hectare. The row width is 1.5m.
PAN 4R-838BR is an early yellow hybrid. This stacked gene hybrid has second-generation stalk borer protection and glyphosate tolerance. Although initially earmarked for the eastern market, this hybrid is also well adapted to western production areas. It performs well under various plant populations and yield potential levels. It has an upright growth habit, tends to be single-eared and produces thick cobs with attractive deep orange grain. It has excellent standability and shows good tolerance to Diplodia Cob Rot. The strong germination and seedling vigour give this hybrid an advantage early in the season. In environments where Brown Rust occurs, a preventative fungicide spray is recommended for this otherwise well-balanced hybrid.
