Despite a dry period in the Free State, with not a single drop of rain falling on his farm from 4 January to 14 February, farmer Henco Oosthuizen recently achieved an impressive harvest in the Hertzogville/Dealesville area.
This season, Henco planted PAN 5R-523R white maize with the expert support of Pannar representative for Hoopstad, Hannelie Tait. The maize was planted on 2 December 2025 at a plant population of 25,000 plants per hectare.
The results show what can be achieved when the right hybrid is matched with good agronomic management and sound farming practices.
This hybrid features new-generation genetics with an upright plant type, allowing for improved harvestability. It offers high yield potential on the water table soils of the northwestern Free State and is also well adapted to the North West. It has good standability, an excellent prolificacy index, and high test weight, contributing to its yield potential.
